I am an Environmental Conservation Masters student. This summer, I will be working with Audubon Internationals Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf on the analysis of their BioBlitz, a species counting event for golf courses globally, as a final part of my graduate program. I will also be learning the basics of Audubon International's certification process. I am new to the environmental field and am specifically interested in public outreach and education related to the potential for a more sustainable golf industry as well as the conservation of amphibians.

Culture Shock, Office Edition: How to Excel

This is the first time in 8 years that I have stepped out of the medical field and, though my time away is not permanent, wow, have I landed myself in a totally different working environment. Projects and press releases and deadlines. Not to mention the anti-scrub business-casual attire, or fashion, as I like to call it.  Building online and over-the-phone relationships with clients is a form of customer service that is incredibly new to me. I have spent so much time with my hands on and verbal responses that I find myself questioning each and every email I type out or phone call introduction. This experience, if anything, has allowed me to strengthen the diversity of my professional communications. And, actually, learning to perfect my office wardrobe is something else I value in this current position, as dressing professionally not only gives me confidence but also persuades others to take me more seriously, especially as an intern.

When the idea of assisting in the planning of this event was first suggested to me by the CEO of Audubon International, I was hesitant. I had never planned a species focused event – or any outdoor event for that matter – and I wasn’t sure about the time commitment required through the months of April and May when I had anticipated focusing solely on end-of-semester asignments and papers. I pondered the idea and my own excuses briefly before becoming aware of what a rare and SPOT ON opportunity this was for me to combine my interests in public outreach, golf, and wildlife.

Audubon International- My Summer Host Organization

Hi everyone! I am excited to share my final project with you all as I stride through the last stretch of UW Madison’s Environmental Conservation Master’s Program. This summer, I will be working with Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf, one of Audubon International’s many environmental and sustainability programs designed for areas in which we live, work, and play. As I enjoy golf, myself, and will soon be working as a conservation professional, my intentions are to further my knowledge in strategies used to change the perception of the game of golf by giving a second meaning to the term “green” when referring to a golf course.
