With my placement wrapping up it’s a good time to reflect on how my work has been going, how the program and its curriculum has prepared me, and the challenges I’ve faced. I’ve completed my first deliverable (the report including all the maps), and this week I’m finishing up the second deliverable.

the challenging but rewarding process of map making
Now that I’ve had 3 1/2 weeks behind me, I finally feel like I’m making some real progress and can see my deliverables coming together. The first two weeks were definitely challenging and I initially had some doubts in my abilities to successfully and meaningfully create maps about the elk reintroduction project. But I was able to problem solve and now look forward to sharing with you what I have done so far and what is still coming.

My placement is with the Wisconsin DNR, specifically assisting them with the elk reintroduction project. The elk population was depleted due to over-hunting in the 1940s, so this is a chance to restore their population to its naturally occurring range. The DNR’s goal is to reintroduce 150 elk over a 5 year period. (https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/elk.html )
2019 marks the 5th and last year of elk translocation from Kentucky into two regions in northern Wisconsin; Clam Lake and Black River. But my placement will not be focusing on current efforts, rather I’ll be creating maps from the 2017 release of 31 elk in the Clam Lake region into Flambeau River State Forest.
